Traber is a patient safety researcher in Houston, TX. Her work focuses on patients' and families' experiences of misdiagnosis and how to leverage those experiences to improve quality of care and reduce diagnostic errors.
Helen is the president of the nonprofit patient safety organizations Mothers Against Medical Error and Consumers Advancing Patient Safety. Since the medical error death of her young son Lewis in 2000, Helen has worked to improve healthcare safety and quality in the U.S. and abroad.
We are currently recruiting patients and family members to share their stories of misdiagnosis. This study is part of a larger five year project to create a patient-centered diagnostic error reporting system.
Accurate, comprehensive reporting could improve our understanding of the origin and impact of, as well as ways of preventing, diagnostic errors.
The reporting system would allow patients to report issues in real time while also providing healthcare systems with structured data allowing integration into existing systems.
